About Us

The shop was initially established in February 1967 when Arthur Clifford Jones and his son Robin opened A.C. Jones at its current location, Arthur having been in business selling tools from a van since 1961.

Robin took full charge in 1984 when his father retired, running it with the help of staff until the summer of 1997, when he was joined by his wife Anne, who left a career in education to move in to the business. Turnover increased year on year, with the reputation of the business growing within the building trade, and also locally. The couple ran the business successfully until they decided to retire in 2006, when it was taken over by Stephen Zsigmond, and his sister-in-law, Angela. Angela similarly left a career in education to join the business.

Stephen already had a well-established wholesale business (J & E Zsigmond & Sons Ltd.) and was one of the shop's principal suppliers, as was his father before him. It seemed a natural progression to move into the retail side.

The shop celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2007 which was marked with a spread in the local newspaper.

The business, which is located in one of the most ethnically diverse areas of the country, owes its continued success to maintaining a traditional, family-run "Tool Shop" which services the local DIY trade and professional tradesmen alike, by supplying tools and hardware in a whole range of qualities, all at very competitive prices. We still sell nails by weight; screws, nuts, bolts and washers in any quantity you could ask for. If you were to enter the shop you would be forgiven if you thought you had entered "Arkwrights" from Open All Hours, or the set of the "four candles" sketch from the Two Ronnies. Incidentally, we do sell fork handles.

In 2009, we were the winners of Tool Repairer of the Year - Silver Award in the prestigious Britain's Best Tool Retailer competition run by DIY Week.
